115: MAGA’s Comeuppance, Generational Weed, Martha’s Disgrace, & Beijing’s Garden

This week on David & Stu Unhinged, we cover Trump’s rebuke by the American voters in a humiliating midterm election blowout, the disgraceful Virginia Senate leader who was running a drug operation, Martha Stewart’s bizarre Halloween costume choice, and the influence and spying by the Chinese on American interests.

MAGA’s Comeuppance: On the eve of the midterms, Trump stood at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool musing about algae and renaming it after himself. Voters did some reflecting of their own and awarded Democrats a huge victory, including flipped Senate seats in Texas and South Carolina, and sending Vivek Ramaswamy packing in Ohio. Tariffs, the Iran war, self-dealing, and vengeance politics finally caught up with our demented, diaper-wearing president. But before Democrats congratulate themselves too much, they should keep in mind that this was a rebuke of Trump, not an endorsement of them.

Generational Weed: Virginia Senate leader Louise Lucas, 82, has been federally indicted along with family members and associates. Prosecutors allege she ran a $4.5 million marijuana operation, which they say she called her “last chance at generational wealth.” Lucas, a longtime legalization champion, vows to fight the charges. We ask where Richmond’s watchdogs were. Some legacy.

Martha’s Disgrace: Five months in federal prison apparently didn’t teach Martha Stewart much humility. This Halloween, she dressed as a homeless person and posted the photo on Instagram to promote her candles. After the backlash, she claimed she was raising awareness of homelessness, then apologized for the insensitive costume. This “gracious” hostess has a long history of loathsome behavior, including mistreating her employees, plagiarizing recipes, and selling low-quality cookware and glassware that gets recalled. Isn’t it about time that we all permanently boycotted this horrible human?

Beijing’s Garden: Beijing plays the long game, planting seeds where few think to look. Prosecutors say those seeds took root in a governor’s office, a city hall, and a suburban real estate office. Ex-Hochul aide Linda Sun faces a January retrial on charges that she secretly worked for China; former Arcadia, California, mayor Eileen Wang has pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal Chinese agent, and Irvine realtor Wanying “Heather” Zhang, who has pleaded not guilty, is accused of spying on the son of Taiwan’s president. Three cases, one patient gardener.
