109: Fishy Business, Hot Mess, Fertittas’ Play & Putin’s Dowry

This week on David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the overfishing of menhaden by greedy corporate interests, debunk the Trump mantra that America is the “hottest country” in the world, discuss the supposed generosity of the Fertitta brothers, and conclude with the tawdry sleaze of Donald Jr.'s latest wedding.

Fishy Business: Most have probably never heard of the menhaden, but the ocean depends on them. For generations, Indigenous peoples used this tiny Atlantic fish as fertilizer, while ospreys and other predators depended on it for food. Today, millions are harvested commercially by Omega Protein and Ocean Harvesters. But due to overfishing by greedy corporate interests, this delicate ecological balance is being upended.

Hot Mess: Trump’s claims that America is the “hottest country” in the world and that he has secured trillions in new global investment, but the numbers tell a very different story. We have a soaring national debt, enormous projected deficits, tariffs are fueling inflation and slowing growth, and global investors are becoming skeptical about U.S. debt and the dollar. So much for making America great again.

Fertittas’ Play: Station Casinos is marking its 50th anniversary by awarding more than $70 million in Red Rock Resorts stock to nearly 10,000 full- and part-time employees, which amounts to $1,000 for every year of service. The casino owners, Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, will still retain roughly 90% of its voting power and are longtime financial supporters of Donald Trump. In this episode, we examine how employee ownership, corporate control, labor relations, and political influence converge in a distinctly Las Vegas story.

Putin’s Dowry: Donald Trump Jr.’s splashy Bahamas wedding celebration was apparently bankrolled by a Russian oligarch with ties to Vladimir Putin. After years of MAGA outrage over Hunter Biden and influence-peddling, the Trumps now appear to have their own foreign-gift problem. This story reeks of hypocrisy, not to mention grave national security issues.
