Difference between jails and prisons

Enjoyed it immensely, as usual! A little disturbed hearing the 10 escapees described as “ violent criminals” when they escaped from a jail which typically confines people accused but not convicted of a crime..( It also houses people with jail sentences of less than a year, or those facing misdemeanor charges. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for those 10)
Riker’s island is a jail, not a prison and reportedly about 70% of the population are awaiting trials, many for months.
