84: A Deadly Prank, a Gilded Refuge, Winner v. Whiner, & Bridge Janitor

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast.
On this 84th episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics:
1. In March 2026, high school teacher Jason Hughes was fatally run over after confronting teens who were toilet-papering his yard as a prom prank, and 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide. Although Hughes’s widow has asked that charges be dropped, prosecutorial discretion rests with the district attorney. The charge to be dropped depends on whether Wallace is found to have driven recklessly.
2. Over the weekend, David visited the Frick Collection, finding solace in its elegant art and serene atmosphere amidst New York’s chaos and the current turbulent political climate. The museum’s restraint and preservation of charm contrast sharply with the self-indulgence and instability seen in today’s leadership, particularly Trump’s recent actions in Iran. The Frick’s masterpieces and dignified ambiance served as a much-needed escape from the noise and recklessness dominating public life.
3. In 2022, Kari Lake, a Trump sycophant, ran a race for Arizona governor, and Katie Hobbs, a thoughtful Democrat, beat her. Since that race, these women have moved in different directions, and what has followed is an interesting trajectory. Katie Hobbs continues to serve as governor and is running for re-election, while Kari Lake’s recent federal media agency appointment was ruled illegal, and she remains a controversial political figure after successive election losses and challenges.
4. Ellen Blum, a 37-year-old Brooklyn resident, has been quietly removing "love locks" and trash from the Brooklyn Bridge, embodying genuine civic responsibility in a city where many are apathetic nepo babies who would rather wait in a long line for Apollo Bagels. Her actions in cleaning up an important city landmark are in stark contrast to some of the newer residents who have flooded certain part of Manhattan and Brooklyn looking to take the best selfie for Instagram.
